Welcome to the official website of the Department of Economics, Imo State University, Owerri. We are committed to excellence in teaching, research, innovation, and community service, while providing quality undergraduate and postgraduate education for students who want to understand and shape the economy.

Our programmes equip students to analyze economic issues, interpret data, and contribute meaningfully to national and global development. The department also offers a strong foundation in key areas such as development economics, public finance, international economics, econometrics, and environmental economics.

About the Department

The Department of Economics at Imo State University, Owerri, envisions a modern academic community that equips students with critical minds and the knowledge required for national, regional, and inter-regional development. We are committed to excellence in teaching, research, and the use of ICT to produce well-adjusted, functionally efficient graduates who can disseminate and apply economic knowledge for national development.

Our mission is to develop well-balanced economics graduates through quality, research-oriented instruction that promotes meaningful change and contributes to integrated national development.

Our objectives are to produce graduates with rational thinking and strong economic insight who can assume responsible roles in government, business, finance, education, research, and development institutions. We also place special emphasis on quantitative analysis to prepare students to become rational and functional economic analysts.

Owerri Zone - NESA Cultural Day Winners

Our student week took place from June 29 to July 4, with events celebrating academic success, leadership, and community spirit. The week concluded with a formal awards dinner on Friday the 3rd, where outstanding students were honored. Wednesday was our cultural day for NESA (Nigeria Economics Students Association), featuring performances, traditions, and student showcases that highlighted our vibrant student body. The winner of the NESA cultural day was Owerri Zone, which delivered an exceptional performance and was awarded the top cultural prize.
